Flécher was launched in the summer of 2025 in response to an observation shared by many crossword enthusiasts: mainstream puzzle brands no longer resonate with a large segment of the younger generations due to their elitist—and sometimes downright problematic—cultural references (racist, sexist, transphobic, and homophobic stereotypes, among others). Based on this observation, Angèle Häfliger-Brethès, founder of Flécher, envisioned the crossword brand of her dreams: references that resonate with young people, whether drawn from pop culture, ballroom culture, rap, gaming, fashion, and of course the cultural contributions linked to immigration that shape France today.
Flécher’s goal is to entertain without offending, to invite readers to learn—and unlearn—while having a blast, but also to restore the prestige of terms that are too often disparaged even though they enrich our language.
Through various editorial sections, readers can learn about the origins of the slang words found in the crossword puzzles, discover cultural recommendations, or read the “Crucinterview,” in which a public figure talks about their relationship with words.
