Konstantin Zhukov, Black Carnation #8 (detail), 2022
Konstantin Zhukov is an artist most often working with various texts and literary sources—from homoerotic poetry of Islamic golden age to the love letters of Oscar Wilde. This time, he turns to the scarcely explored and poorly documented LGBTQ+ histories of his home country, Latvia. His ongoing Black Carnation project draws parallels between the past and the present, combines the facts and fiction by looking into the language, the personal stories and the meeting places of gay men in Latvia.
