The Trouble with Not Normal

Une conférence de Paul Clinton
samedi 6 avril, 15h

A lecture by Paul Clinton

Queer politics are driven by the rejection of social and sexual norms, as well as the identities which they shape. But what are the limits when it comes to transgression or the undoing of political hierarchies? Discussing his book Other Hunting (forthcoming, Ma Bibliothèque) Paul Clinton will look back to the roots of anti-normative queer politics in 1970s French gay liberation. He will show how arguments against the family and age of consent laws were central, but unacknowledged, factors in the formation of contemporary queer politics. Looking at the work of Tony Duvert, René Scherer and others he asks whether a theory that rejects definitions, norms or assumptions can really deal with differences in power or problems of consent.
